Abstract
This book is an expression of a particular ontology born of my own complex
identity. It is a multi-dimensional presentation of a trans-cultural
(Gilroy 1993) and conceptually performative framework as expressed
through public performances (Newbury 1997). The framework is constructed
from my understanding of many intercultural, conceptual and
performative practices, embodied over my career as a performer to date
(Dimension 5).
As a result, different performative philosophies form the main frames
of my exploration. Process philosophers, such as De Quincey (2002) and
Whitehead (1975), assume a nexus of being and becoming. Performance
philosophers, such as Laban (1966, 1971 and 1984) and Barba and Savarese
(1991), assume a nexus of being, becoming and performance. By this I mean
all gestures and events produced by performers are a process of unfolding
emotions and ideas, which are parts of an interior experience relating to
that person’s ‘being’. This process principle of ‘being’ and ‘becoming’ is a
fusion (De Quincey 2002) revealed in performance, located at the nexus
between my own being, becoming and performance.
