A comparison of the language situations of Bavarian and Scots

Abstract

The article investigates the similarities between Scots and Bavarian in terms of social, historical and sociolinguistic features. It cites particularities which distinguish Bavarian from Standard German and other German varieties. A major difference between Scotland and Bavaria is cited. The parallels between the linguistic situations of Bavaria and Scotland are examined.
