Biography

Ulrike is Senior Lecturer in Sociology in the Department of Social Sciences. In 2012, she joined the University of Winchester from the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES), University College London, where she was Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2009-2011) in Migration and Diasporic Citizenship in Russia and Eastern Europe at the Centre for East European Language Based Area Studies (CEELBAS). Prior to this, Ulrike received her PhD from the Centre for Russian, European and Eurasian Studies (CREES) at the European Research Institute, University of Birmingham in 2008. 

She teaches Sociology modules on gender and sexualities, youth and social change, ideology, conflict and terrorism and is Programme Leader for the BA Sociology. 

In February 2017, she won the Student-Led Teaching Award for Best Delivered Module of the Year for her Gender and Sexualities Module.

In August and September 2017, she was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Aleksanteri Institute, University of Helsinki.

In August 2018, she assumed the role of Faculty Postgraduate Research Students Coordinator.

Higher Education Teaching Qualification: Higher Education Academy Fellowship (FHEA).

Research interests

​Ulrike's research interests lie in the sociologies of gender, migration and diasporas, with a particular focus on transnationalism and cosmopolitanism in Russia and Southern Caucasus. Her most recent research explores the processes of social transformation in the former Soviet Union. Ulrike is currently conducting research on women and political transformations in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.

Supervision of research students

​Dr Ziemer welcomes enquiries about research supervision. Her areas of supervision are: gender; ethnic minorities; racism; youth and youth cultural practices in post-socialist societies; qualitative, ethnographic research methods; women and political transformations in the Southern Caucasus.
