Beth Mackintosh

Dr Elizabeth (Beth) Mackintosh is a Lecturer of Philosophy and Theology and a Visiting Research and Knowledge Exchange Fellow (VRF) in the School of Humanities, having taught at the University of Winchester regularly since 2015. Her background is in philosophy and theology (BA Philosophy and Theology, MA Theology, PhD Philosophy, all from Durham University), though her methodology and research are philosophical.

She is also a Fellow at the Oxford Interfaith Forum at Oxford University and is a founding Editor for H-interfaith, currently serving as a Review Editor. She has a longstanding involvement in public philosophy and school partnerships, is an Ambassador for Thoughtful and leads the UK leg of the (Women) In Parenthesis, Philosophy in the Wild project. She was a secondary teacher for over 20 years and was fortunate enough to be able to combine her teaching roles with academic research.

Beth's overarching research focus is in moral philosophy and theology and medical ethics, as well as the intersection of animal and environmental ethics in environmental philosophy. Her research has increasingly focussed on the work of the late British philosopher Mary Midgley, and her role within the 'Wartime Quartet' of female philosophers Elizabeth Anscombe, Philippa Foot, Mary Midgley and Iris Murdoch.
