Description
Background: considering the impact of major shifts in contemporary culture on dance - including the influence of media, and technology on young people - this roundtable event seeks to gather the perspectives of a range of dance educators and academics on issues of dance training in the UK.Training methods at UK HEIs have largely drawn upon codified techniques of American modern dance, European Physical Theatres and more fluid forms of postmodern dance and somatic approaches. Recent changes in the nature and perception of dance since the growth of social media platforms and digitisation invite more open debate around the nature of what and how we teach and the effectiveness of UK dance training at HE level.
Dance fosters both singularity and collectivity in artistic education, offering invaluable training to operate within the immediate and interconnected contemporary professional world. We want to re-examine technical and performance training in response to the impact of some of the issues pertaining to shifting politics of education, many of which are particular to the UK dance field. This roundtable event proposes to examine the different approaches to dance training and their relations within and to the wider professional context.
