By the time Alys Russell became treasurer of the British Federation of University Women and of the British Section of the International Federation of University Women’s finance committee, she had built up extensive experience in institution-building and fund-raising for a range of institutions. These include The British Women’s Temperance Association, The Bedford College Council, the St Pancras School for Mothers, the Russian Women’s Maternity Hospital (which became the Millicent Fawcett Hospitals), and the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies. At the British Federation Alys would become an important member of the Crosby Hall endowment fund. She raised funds for a room at Crosby Hall to commemorate the work of Millicent Fawcett and was a driving force in the collection of books for the Sybil Campbell Library, located at Crosby Hall. As an American graduate she was also involved in the initial oversight of Reid Hall, the American Federation of University Women’s hall of residence in Paris, where the launch of the Crosby Hall endowment fund was publicised (at the International Federation’s 1922 conference). The talk will focus on the experience Alys brought to her activities on behalf of federations of university women.
